Educational support groups are free and open to both OCC shelter residents and the community. Referrals from schools, juvenile court, and other community agencies and organizations are encouraged. All groups are held either at the OCC Training Center in Hot Springs (339 Charteroak St.) or at the OCC office in Arkadelphia (401 Crittenden St.). Snacks and meals are served in the after-school and summer programs. New classes are added on a regular basis, depending on community needs and facilitator availability.
|Fancy Pants - Etiquette Class - Ages 13-17
Empowering using the social tools needed to treat others with respect, and earn back respect for yourself.
|Anger Management - Ages 13-17
Educational and interactive classes that provide relaxation techniques and coping skills, as well as teaching how to recognize anger and other negative emotions. Meets weekly for 5 consecutive weeks.
|The Council for Boys and Young Men - Ages 13-17
Strengths-based approach to promote healthy development for boys and address the physical, emotional, and relational aspects of manhood. Evidence-based reproductive health curriculum is also included in this group. Meets weekly for 5 consecutive weeks.
|Getting Ahead for Youth - Ages 13-17
This is an asset-based model that uses three “R Rules” to help teens to identify resources to help build resilience, and also discover individual academic and career plans. Meets weekly for 18 consecutive weeks.
|Girls’ Circle - Ages 13-17
Strengths-based approach to promote healthy development for girls and address the physical, emotional, and relational aspects of womanhood. Evidence-based reproductive health curriculum is also included in this group. Meets weekly for 5 consecutive weeks.
|Life Skills - Ages 13-17
This is an asset-based model that helps youth identify resources, build resilience, learn to manage money and time, and have a better understanding of the importance of respect, relationships, and positive choices. Meets weekly for 6 consecutive weeks.
|Open Minds: A Drug & Alcohol Recovery Class - Ages 13-18
An education, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) based program to facilitate freedom from addition and improve critical thinking skills to help youth make smarter, healthier, and more positive choices. Meets weekly for 10 consecutive weeks.
|Street Law - All Ages
An educational program created by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to educate youth about the causes and consequences of various crimes, help them see the impact of choices and actions, and develop strategies to repair damage caused by criminal behavior. Meets weekly for 10 consecutive weeks.
